Wild Things Inspired Bedroom |
This project is a nursery mural which was completed over July and August of 2004. The goals were to make it personal for the family and gender neutral. This is a very small room (approximately 9 feet by 9 feet) the colors were kept light and bright. This first image is a detail from the ceiling. This is the only permanent light fixture in the room and to make it part of the mural it became an alien's hot air balloon. The ceiling was done in blue with wispy clouds of yellow and peach. Two other airplanes fill the space as well.
The walls are dominated by the yellow sky which leads into the light blue of the ceiling. There are more hot air balloons and airplanes on each of the four walls as well. On the longest unbroken wall there is a hill which will rise over some of the furnishings. The reason for the hill is to give the "characters" of the mural a place to be. This next image is of the homeowner's dog, Gromit. Gromit and the other animas are painted on wrap-around canvases with a beveled edge. My goal for these portraits was to get the character as well as a general likeness. The paintings match up with the background of the mural as can be seen with portrait of Zak as he sits on a cloud above the closet. There is one window in this room and next to it I painted a tree. Under the tree is where the crib will be placed. This is the darkest section of the mural as the green leaves are the darkest color in the room. Also in this section, the other of the homeowner's cats, Zoe make an appearance in the tree
The flowers, butterflies, and birds were all stylized to make them less feminine and the ground was done in a loose style to make the room see less cluttered
